چکیده
We performed the first systematic search for the minimum variability time scale between 0.3 and 10 keV studying the 28 brightest early (< 3000 s) afterglows detected by Swift-XRT up to March 2008. We adopt the power spectrum analysis in the time domain: unlike the Fourier spectrum, this is suitable to study the rms variations at different time-scales. We find that early XRT afterglows show variability in excess of the Poissonian noise level on time-scales as short as ∼ 1 s (rest frame value), with the shortest tmin associated with the highest energy band. The γ−ray prompt emission of GRB 080319B shows a characteristic average variability time-scale < tvar >∼ 1s; this parameter undergoes a remarkable evolution during the prompt emission (BAT observation).

The properties of their hosts provide important clues to the progenitors of different classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The hosts themselves also constitute a sample of high-redshift star-forming galaxies which, unlike most other methods, is not selected on the luminosities of the galaxies themselves. We discuss what we have learnt from and about GRB host galaxies to date.

The present common view about GRB origin is related to cosmology. There are two evidences in favour of this interpretation. The first is connected with statistics, the second is based on measurements of the redshifts in the GRB optical afterglows. Red shifts in optical afterglows had been observed only in long GRB. Statistical errors, and possibility of galactic origin of short GRB is discussed...

We report on optical observations on GRB 000210 obtained with the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope and the 1.54-m Danish Telescope starting 12.4 hours after the gamma-ray event. The content of the X-ray error box determined by the Chandra satellite is discussed.

During the past ten years, the predictions of the cannonball (CB) model of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) were repeatedly confronted with the mounting data from spaceand ground-based observations of GRBs and their afterglows (AGs). The two underlying radiation mechanisms of the model, inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and synchrotron radiation (SR), provided an accurate description of the prompt and af...

A substantial fraction of prompt GRB spectra have soft spectral indexes exceeding the maximum allowed by the synchrotron model αmax = −2/3. Some spectra also exhibit very sharp break at Ep, inconsistent with the smooth synchrotron spectra. These facts pose a serious problem for the “optically thin synchrotron” interpretation of the prompt emission. We review various models suggested in order to...
